The 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 has arrived, and it’s everything the hype-worthy leaks and rumors led us to believe it would be.
This GT500 takes the esteemed title of most powerful street-legal production model Ford ever—all previous ‘Stangs included.
A hand-built, 5.2-liter V8 tuned to produce over 700 horsepower gives the Mustang a mid-three-second 0-60 mph time and a sub-11-second quarter-mile time on the drag strip.
Past muscle cars have sometimes been underwhelming when confronted with corners. Ford apparently addressed this issue by inverting the Shelby’s supercharger to lower the center of gravity and adding a track-bred MagneRide suspension. So—we’ll find out just how well this model makes those tight turns for sure once behind the wheel.
Ford ditched the old 10-speed automatic for a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that’s capable of lightning-fast shifts under the 100 millisecond mark in normal, weather, sport drag and track drive modes.
Inside is a supercar-worthy interior boasting a carbon fiber instrument panel appliqué, Recaro racing seats, a 12-inch full-color LCD instrument cluster, and an eight-inch touchscreen with FordPass connectivity.
Two upgrades are available. There’s Ford’s Handling Package, which includes adjustable strut top mounts and a spoiler with a Gurney flap.
Then—for hardcore Mustang fans who want the GT500 to be their track day car—there’s a Carbon Fiber Track Package. It comes with exposed carbon fiber wheels which are slightly wider in the back, custom Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires, an adjustable carbon fiber track wing, splitter wickers and no rear seat, which cuts down on weight.
Pricing info isn’t available yet, but for Ford’s most powerful ride of all time, you can likely expect to pay close to six figures.
